How to Choose a Wedding Caterer for your Connecticut Wedding

When selecting a Connecticut catering company you are looking for excellent food, service and the ability to work with the enormity of the detail involved in your day. There are certain key factors that you should discuss when meeting your caterer for the first time.

Availability

First and foremost you need to see if your caterer is available on the date you require and find out what the booking and payment process is. Be sure to understand at what point your date becomes secure and when payments are needed. The last thing you want is a sudden shock and unexpected bill just before the wedding.

We suggest that you ideally start researching and meeting with caterers at least 9 months before your wedding. Many venues may have a list of preferred suppliers, including caterers, so once your date is chosen and the venue is booked that’s a great time to start contacting catering companies. Some of our recommended venues include: The Waveny House in New Canaan, The Carousel at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven, Penfield Pavilion in Fairfield, and The Burr Mansion in Fairfield.

Budget

It is important you get an early indication of catering costs and what they include. Ask about what options are available to you, if you are on a limited budget tell your caterer what it is – at Fitzgerald’s Fine Catering, we always provide a package to suit your needs. Consider what is and what isn’t included in the price as often this can vary from one caterer to the next.

Quality of Food

When selecting your Connecticut caterer you are looking for stunning presentation paired with sensational taste. Here at Fitzgerald’s Fine Catering, we understand the importance of having professional, commercial facilities and a team of talented individuals to serve your guests on the day. Fitzgerald’s also creates seasonal menus and free tasting sessions.

Professional Service

Finally, service is extremely important, equal to the quality and style of your food. It’s important that you receive the utmost level of service right from your initial inquiry, through to your tasting session right up until the end of the wedding day itself. Fitzgerald’s Fine Catering of Connecticut will provide you with the enthusiasm, excitement and expertise your wedding deserves!

Connecticut Wedding Venue Showcase: The Waveny House in New Canaan, CT

The Waveny House in Connecticut is a historic Tudor mansion located in Waveny Town Park, managed by the New Canaan Recreation Department. Waveny House is a popular site for Connecticut weddings and receptions, social events and cultural activities. The beautiful grounds and open air patio compliment the early 1900′s period dated wood paneled walls and ceilings, tudor style leaded glass windows, marble fireplaces, hand stenciled muraled walls, and wide plank wooden floors. Take a tour down the flagstone walkways through the gardens and fish pond to discover the beautiful Walled Garden, a special nook for a small ceremony. The bride and groom truly have an opportunity to create that special wedding at Waveny House.

Connecticut Wedding Venue Showcase: The Carousel at Lighthouse Point Park in New Haven

We wanted to take some time this month to highlight a great wedding venue in New Haven, Connecticut called The Carousel at Lighthouse Point Park. The Carousel at Lighthouse Point Park is a unique historic facility. Besides housing the antique Carousel, the building provides ample space for private functions with beautiful views of New Haven Harbor and Long Island Sound, especially at sunset.

The carousel building was built in 1916, replacing an earlier one. The building and its carousel were together listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 15, 1983. The carousel includes 70 figures and two chariots. The carousel appears to be a hybrid put together of figures from different sources, including figures by Charles Carvel of Brooklyn and by Charles Looff.

The Carousel at Lighthouse Point Park is located on an 82-acre park on Long Island Sound and is the perfect place to hold your wedding reception. The venue is available from April 1st to November 1st and has a 275 person capacity. Please take the time to view some photos of the venue below:

The keys to having beautiful wedding decor and floral design

Wedding décor can help make or break a beautiful reception space and the right combination of floral and other accents are a key component. The first step toward making your vision for wedding décor come to life is setting up a floral consultation. When approaching your florist, here are some items to consider in order to make your consultation as successful as possible:

Bring ideas or examples of your wedding colors, favorite flowers, and arrangements or centerpieces you like. Also, would you consider yourself a traditional or more modern bride? It’s wise to have a foundation to build upon when creating your vision since there are so many elements of varying styles. These decisions will help shape the mood and overall atmosphere of your wedding.

Where is your ceremony and do you plan on having ceremony flowers? If the ceremony is in an outdoor space, you may need to rent pedestals or an arch to display the flowers. If it’s at a church, ask the onsite coordinator what is permitted. For example, many churches and venues allow floral arrangements to be displayed but do not allow real flower petals to be thrown or placed in an aisle.

What type of flowers do you want for the bridal party and how would you like them to mix with your bridal bouquet? For your bouquet, do you want an arrangement that is mostly white or filled with color? Should it be tight or cascading? If your bouquet is mostly white or ivory, check if it might blend in with your dress; sometimes a bouquet of different types of flowers can help alleviate this concern. What about the flower girl and ring bearer? And don’t forget about some family members; sometimes it’s nice to make sure the mothers and grandmothers have something pretty to wear.

Centerpieces are a key component of the reception décor, so invest a good amount of time into contemplating your vision. Is your style clean and simple, or extravagant and ornate? Also, don’t forget about auxiliary tables throughout the venue, like belly bars and such. Many times people opt to have a very small arrangement (a small vase with a simple flower) for these items.

And lastly, the season. You may have some of your favorite flowers already picked out, but choosing ones that are in season can help a great deal with cost.

Wedding Reception Checklist & Timeline

For months, you’ve planned every detail of your wedding day, but often, the reception gets left off of the list. As a bride and groom, you want to focus on enjoying the celebrations, not worrying about the order of events.

One creative idea is to make a reception itinerary for your guests, especially if there is a gap between the end of the service and the beginning of the wedding reception. Be sure to give a timeline of events to your photographer, caterer, and videographer, so they know how to coordinate their services.

Here’s a sample wedding checklist and timeline you may want to consider!

• Your guests arrive at the wedding reception venue, where they will be greeted by an usher and offered refreshments by the caterer.

• If you are having a sit-down dinner, guests will find their names on tables or given their table numbers.

• The bridal party is announced by a DJ or reception MC. The bridal party is announced in this order: the bride’s parents, groom’s parents, the bridesmaids and groomsmen, the maid of honor and best man, then the ring bearer and flower girl and last of all the newlyweds.

• The bride’s father makes a short speech and welcomes everyone to the wedding reception and thanks them all for coming.

• The first course is served.

• The best man makes a toasts. Additional toasts can be made here as well.

• The DJ or live band announces the first dance. Be sure to give a play list of songs to play and songs not to play to the DJ or band.

• After the first dance, the dance with parents follows, or guests are asked to join the wedding party on the dance floor.

• The wedding cake is cut and after the groom and bride give bites to each other, cake is distributed, or is distributed after the garter throw and bouquet toss.

• After several dances the groom throws the garter, and the toss of the bridal bouquet follows.

• Coffee and tea is offered to guests, while the bride and groom change into going away clothes.

• Birdseed, bubbles or rice is distributed (be sure to check with your venue about what is preferred) and the bride and groom leave the reception.

• If an informal after-party continues, be sure to tell participants when and where they should meet. Informal parties can also be arranged for out of town guests or family.

Your wedding reception is a celebration that begins your new marriage! No matter if the schedule goes as followed, or if plans change mid-stream, don’t worry. The reception is about having fun, letting go and enjoying those who have come to support your new marriage!

What our clients have to say….

We here at Fitzgerald’s Fine Catering in Connecticut are very proud of the job we do for our clients. However, you shouldn’t take our word for it. You should let our former and current clients tell you how they feel.

The following are comments we have received from a select few of our many many clients. Please take a moment to read each and every one. Maybe this will help you decide that Fitzgerald’s should be your preferred caterer for your upcoming wedding, party, or special event.

“Food was amazing!!! Everyone loved everything they had. Grilled chicken with mango was a huge success! Staff was so nice and attentive!!! We were married at lighthouse in New Haven, CT where there is no kitchen on site. They did such a good job, no one even noticed that everything was cooked right on site! Great job, would highly recommend!” -Christen

“This guy has it figured out. Everything promised and more was delivered with fantastic service and beautiful presentation. I couldn’t imagine it being better in any way. On top of it, Nicholas was the least expensive full service caterer we interviewed. He includes all the stuff in one package. Other caterers gave us a price and then started adding on rentals and service fees which more than doubled the price! One even said if we didn’t buy the booze from them, they were going to charge us per drink poured plus an uncorking fee for bottles on the table. I am so glad we ran from them. My Mom and Dad are glad to. Delicious food, wonderful service and an incredible overall experience. Call Nicholas and you’ll guarantee a perfect reception your family will talk about for years to come!” -Sara

“Dreams can come true! Nicholas and his staff were incredible! The food was amazing! My mom is getting like three calls a day from my guests talking about how great the food was. Nicholas is the perfect caterer to lead you through the process in a very relaxed fashion. He was great from tasting to booking to the end of our night. He makes it easy. Look no further, Fitzgerald’s!” -Kate

“Let me start off by saying that Nick Shope is awesome! He was extremely helpful and flexible, and I would recommend him to anyone. The food and service was great! His service is great because he includes the china, silver, glasses, and linens which makes it so much easier when you are having your reception at a place that does not have any of those items. Him and his staff are awesome because they will help set up your tables the way you want them w/ favors, etc. If you ask for it, he will basically do it. (w/ in reason) The best part too is that his packages are very reasonably priced.” -Laura and Cory

“Our day was rockin’. What started off as a rainy day at the beach ended up being the best party we’d ever been to. Fitzgerald’s staff made it happen. The bartenders were great personalities and really kept my college friends entertained. Probably the best lobster I’ve ever eaten. My mother in-law took me aside at the end to say she approved of my selection in caterers. Big words since I didn’t let her have anything to do with the planning for John’s BIG day. Fitzgerald’s YES!” -Kat C

“Our food was soooo good, and the price was relatively low compared the the cuisine that we’d tried before. Loved the service and the actual turnout. Can’t say enough good things about them.” -Ari
